working on personal stuff

Now that Christmas is over I'm finally getting some real time to work on personal projects. I decided I need to start making the work I would like to make, so I'm working on a gig poster for a DJ named Blockhead. This piece is interesting because it different than anything that I have done in the past. I layer down a under painting and did line work on top. Its pretty cool because it is a happy medium between painting and drawing. Also I'm getting this done alot quicker than I thought so ill probably have time to work on another more detailed piece. Here is a work in progress. I'm going to design the type on the computer.

Other than that I've been sketching a lot lately. Trying to generate as many ideas as possible. Get them down and start producing. It feels good to be creating again. I'm feeling more fulfilled. I just need to keep up my momentum and create some good work.

How am I expected to get any work done with this cuteness being around

Logo work

I woke up this morning and had a pretty creative day. Made some coffee, wrote a bit, and actually sat down at the desk to work before working my real job. I am going to enjoy having some time off of school to work on some personal projects. I've been enjoying collage so I want to figure out a way to incorporate that more into my design work. Its all experimental now and I'm getting closer to figuring it out. I am really inspired by Kath Gitte and Vaughn Oliver. I would love to do work in that vein.

I am wrapping up my final logos for Trademark. The class has been pretty lax and focused on personal development. Meaning we didn't have a bunch of crazy deadlines and mounting to do (which is so nice). I do not have as many marks as other people in my class but I feel they all have my style. However, these past couple weeks I really buckled down and did some marks I like. They still need color but here are the black and white versions. The Zoo Boo one is my favorite and feels the most complete.

The hard part really is over and all I need to do is turn in my stuff next week. It feels really good to be wrapping things up.

Finals

Wrapping up the end of the semester which is exciting. The end game really is in sight seeing how I only have two more semesters to go. Ive been thinking a lot about my portfolio and where I want everything to be before I graduate. I still have a lot of work a head of me but I feel confident in myself as a designer.

I also decided I need to start reading up more about design. I have this nifty tablet and I could really use it to it fullest to stay in the loop about the art and design world. Not only that, keep myself inspired which is a whole task within itself. Now would be a good time since I can take all the inspiration I can get. My teachers suggested a lot of sites that are very interesting. Plus I am just beginning to realize how awesome Behance is (I know I'm super late). I stumbled upon these Served sites powered by Behance and they are pretty great for looking a work. It would be nice to have some podcasts to listen to as well to take a break from listening to music while I work.

I decided to take some time off of work to really work on my logos tonight. Its probably going to be a late one. I wrapped up the sticker illustration, just need to print it out and make the pack. I'm going to make a little booklet with my art in it to give out to possibly get me more shows. Also print out some more shirts so I can start getting an inventory going. So I'm going to be busting my ass until next tuesday then I'm done.

Sticker design

I've been working all day to finish up a sticker design for illustration. This piece I decided to experiment with laying down a light wash of blue on cream paper then drawing with graphite over it. Overall I'm pretty happy with it but I know it still needs work before printing.

Catching up

Its been a very busy semester. I hate the fact that I've been neglecting my blog. Just got my site up again and decided I need to keep up. Plus I love keeping a log of what I'm doing.

At the beginning of the month I did another sweet peach show which was nice.

Currently I'm working on my final projects. For illustration in working on some t shirts, a promotional book with my art and a sticker design. Ive added pictures of a package design I recently wrapped up.

The final for art direction it's interesting. We are making a commercial for HEB trying to get people our age to buy holiday food at HEB. Basically we are shooting a worse case scenario so we are burning a bunch of food. It's pretty hilarious.

Other than that I'm writing a lot, sketching when I can and trying to stay sane.

Working on school stuff mostly

New school year seems promising.

My art direction we are learning about making ad campaigns. Which I totally feel like making is for the devil. However, we are going to make some cool projects. Our first one is to raise awareness for solar energy. I really do have confidence we are going to have a good project.

Trademark Design seems very cool because it is going to get my ass into shape. I've been thinking a lot about my senior portfolio. Also, competitions and getting my name out there.

Illustration is going to be my creative class where I am going to be able to really experiment. We are working on editorial work now. I really want to work with collages and textures. Plus I have been drawing a lot this summer to refine my skills

As far as side projects go, my Art is featured in the Romani Gallery on east Austin for the Walk in Midnight Show. Also, I have a show coming up in November with Sweet Peach. Absolutely love being a part of this collective. Still keeping my eyes open for any other opportunities.

I've been putting together an Art zine with a friend of mine. Here is a preview.

Getting ready for the show.

Its been a wile since I last posted. Mostly because school was kicking my ass. Nevertheless, the semester is over and I have two art shows lined up this summer. The first one is June 12th with RAW artists. Have a bunch of new work to show and since I have done one of these before I know whats up. I made this flyer for the show.

I got these printed out yesterday and I am going to really start pushing to get people there. I also got a bunch of framing stuff and have been framing my pieces. I found some nice frames at goodwill for super cheap. I have been hand staining and painting them so they look good. My room is a mess but it is worth it.

Other than that, I have just been sketching a lot. Trying to practice seeing and getting my drawing skills up. I will probably have some new stuff before the show is all goes right. Just trying to stay productive.
